Stockholm is the capital and the largest city in Sweden. It lies on the eastern coast of the country and covers 14 islands which form the archipelago of Stockholm. A dynamic, cosmopolitan and vibrant city, you can visit it on foot or by boat.
Stockholm has a continental climate. The seasons there are very pronounced with cold winters and mild to hot summers with wind speeds varying from 0 to 18 knots during the high season. Several sailing routes are available from Stockholm. However, Coolsailing suggests that you head to Lindingo island, Vaxolm island and, finally, Värmdö island.
Stockholm is a magnificent town with a very balanced landscape of buildings, parks and bodies of water. It is a very pleasant town to visit, known as the "Venice of the North", water represents one third of the town's surface area. Next to the royal palace you will find Storkyrkan cathedral, where almost all of the kings were crowned. The palace dates from the 13th century and has been extended several times. Continue your visit with Stockholm City Hall, which is one of the city's emblematic buildings with its Golden Hall, and climb to the top of its 106-metre tower to admire the magnificent view over all of Stockholm. Do not miss the Vasa Museum, the most visited in Sweden, which houses the boat of the same name that has been almost completely restored. You will also see the Fotografiska, the modern museum of photography.
Then, stop off at the Garden of Carl Milles, the famous Swedish sculptor, and admire his creations that combine natural beauty and sophisticated works of art. Do not miss Drottningholm Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, currently inhabited by the royal family. Also, pay a visit to Stockholm modern art museum, located on Skeppsholmen island. There, you will discover many works by famous artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Leger, as well as temporary exhibitions. For those looking for big thrills, Grona Land is a theme park that is well worth the detour that not only offers rides but also a dance floor. Then, set sail for the island of Vaxhom!
Stop off quickly to visit Vaxholm Castle, built to protect the island from invasions by the Russians and Danes. You will also be able to walk along the shores and admire the typical colourful houses. Beyond the port, you will find an extremely natural part of the island and a magnificent landscape of forest and sea. Use the opportunity to have a picnic or simply admire the beauty of the place.
After Vaxholm, continue your route and drop anchor in Värmdö. This island is packed with charming sites where you will be able to have a drink and watch the sunset. Above all, Värmdö has an exciting history that you can discover when you visit the Festung Frederiksborg, a former 19th century fortress built to protect the town. In terms of activities, you will be spoilt for choice: Kayak, water-skiing, sailing and swimming (we recommend Grisslinge Havsbad, a pretty beach between the sea and the forest).
Stockholm and its surroundings offer a great variety of activities. You can spend your days doing sport, relaxing and enjoying cultural outings in addition to the wonderful feeling of doing all this by boat. Immerse yourself in Swedish culture and take advantage of the many museums and historic sites.
