The Azores, the Portuguese archipelago

The Azores are a group of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,450 km west of Lisbon. The surface area of the Azores is 2,346 km². The climate is temperate with a wind from the Gulf Stream that moderates the temperatures. It can rain at all times of the year, but tends to be particularly abundant in winter.

The Azores comprise nine islands. Sao Miguel, the largest island in the archipelago, Santa Maria, and five central islands: Faial, Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico, and, to the west Flores and Corvo.

Sailing in the Azores from Ponta Delgada?

Set sail from Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel with your boat rental and make your way to Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico and, finally, Faial. In the Azores, the weather changes very quickly and it is not uncommon to see a bright sunny sky be replaced by rain, thus making the conditions very difficult to predict.

Places to visit in the Azores
